USPS says airmail takes 5-business days to get there and who-knows how much longer in the local system!
Wed, 5 Oct. Got an email reply from the PC saying the flight had arrived in Madagascar as scheduled this past Sunday. The first 4 days the group is in orientation at the training site and then the 10-weeks of training will begin. There is NO internet access and very poor phone service. Posted by Jack The Dad.
Fri. 7 Oct from Jack the Dad. Michael got ahold of a friend's cell phone today and was able to talk to his Mom for 5 minutes before he got cut off. Said that after training he would be assigned to AMBALAVAO, a place "bigger than a lot of others." But I can't find it on the map!
Just found it using google.com. Ambalavao is inland South and just West of Fianarantsoa in the southern part of the country. It is on the Merriam-Webster atlas link.
oct 10 - found Ambalavao, close enough to antipodal for my purpose; good luck in your training Michael! :)
Dad & Mom finally received their first letter from Michael on Oct 20. It took 18 days from the day it was written! Couldn't read the postmark.
Dad & Mom received their 2d letter from Michael today, Oct. 24. Took 15 days. Told a lot about daily life there.
Michael will be going to his site (Ambalavao) Nov 3-7 for a look-see around with the PCV that is based there now. He should be able to get on the internet to email during those days. Dad & Mom
Michael hasn't been able to update this blog as he has not had access to the internet. Maybe pretty soon, though. 31 Oct by Dad
2 Nov. Letter #3 arrived today having taken 17 days. Michael feels very isolated and misses his freedom. I wouldn't be surprised if these few days he is spending at his site for will be the deciding factor as to whether he returns to the States or follows thru with his 2-year commitment. Jack the Dad
We are thinking and praying for you every day, Mike. Nov. 4 by the Serapiglia's
Letter #4 arrived today (also took 2 weeks to get here!)with a lot of interesting stuff talked about. But also got an email from Michael after his return from a few good days in Ambalavao. He is well on his way to making a decision to follow through with his two year commitment. Nov. 8 Jack the dad
This message is for Michael......OK, Michael, on Nov. 21 we purchased 2 phone cards so we are ready to call you, once you provide a phone number, at a reasonable cost! Dad & Mom
Haven't had a letter from Michael in 22 days! 30Nov. Dad & Mom
Diane, Dad & Mom talked for almost an hour with Michael at 9:30 AM Sunday, 4 Dec. It was prearranged a few days ago & was initiated from home using a phone card, 20.8 cents per minute. He is getting ready for his swearing in on the 6th and then to his site on the 8th. He will be there for 3 months with the chance to opt out of the assignment after that time.
9 Dec. Still no letters from Michael! Dad & Mom
Here it is Dec 15 and it took 5 weeks for the next letter from Michael to be received. It was long and newsy but was written 'way back on Oct 30 & Nov 4! Dad & Mom
